The Development of Cialis
Since the release of Cialis, and its approval by the FDA in December 2002, many people have wondered why we need two, seemingly identical, drugs to treat impotence in men.
The first thing we need to point out here is that the drugs which leave the industry (Viagra and Cialis) are absolutely not identical in any way. Yes, they are both used to treat the same condition - however the active ingredient and the mechanism of action of those ingredients are fundamentally different in both drugs.
The Weekend Pill
The most obvious difference between Viagra and Cialis is the amount of time that each of the drugs unit is active in the body for.
Shortly after its release, Cialis was nicknamed the "weekend pill" - as people were able to consume it on a Friday night, and still experience the effects of it on a Sunday afternoon. Arguably, this extended period of effect is probably the key factor in the surge in popularity of Cialis since its launch.
Here are a few other quick facts and differences which consumers have noticed with regard to Cialis:
- Produced and manufactured by Eli Lilly.
- Initially discovered by ICOS.
- Common dosages include 5mg, 10mg and 20mg.
- Can also be used to treat pulmonary hypertension.
For patients who experience pulmonary arterial hypertension, the prescribed dose by the FDA of Cialis is 40 mg. Whilst it is approved for the treatment of this condition, the actual drug which is used as a different brand name (even though it is identical to Cialis).
The Current State of Affairs
In 2007, the company which initially discovered Cialis was bought by Eli Lilly, and this merger meant that the latter company now owned all of the patients and rights to Cialis itself.
At the present time, the company has no intention of creating other impotence drugs, because of the popularity of its flagship brand Cialis. This makes perfect sense, and as many consumers have pointed out, with Viagra and Cialis currently being available in most countries throughout the world, there is no need for another erectile dysfunction drug to be developed, marketed, and sold.
Overall, it seems that Eli Lilly's success with Cialis will continue, as growth forecasts show that Cialis is continuing its upward path of sales in America.
